Searching for excitement in Long Beach

We drove to the northern end of North Beach peninsula to the little ghost town of Oysterville, home to Willapa oyster. Saw huge mound of oyster shells, some old sea captains' home and a quaint church.  Read that it was a very popular place during the California gold rush as the miners loved to eat the Willapa oysters.

We went back to see if anything was happening in Long Beach at the International Kite Festival. There is nothing sadder than a kite contest & no wind! So we ended up ending a crab roll & chowder and visited some of the shops. We did get a chuckle from one of the booths at the Kite festival that had big banners saying BEACH DUDs....and all they had was sweatshirts. As you can tell from Fred's down jacket....it started out cool today.

Layin in wait for wind!

This use to be world's largest frying pan when it was forged in 1941 to celebrate the annual razorback clam festival that is held in Long Beach each year.

These are pictures of 8th street in Astoria. It is hard to get a good appreciation of how steep this road is. You are only seeing about half way up in the first picture.

We got a better appreciation of Astoria's hills after a delicious dinner that Tracy fixed for us. Their neighbor Brittany went with us for a walk...should I say hill climb?  I checked the fitbit before we left...walked over 7000 steps and equivalent of 30 flights of stairs. We picked blackberries when we got back.
